1pm-4pm : Helping People with ACEs
Adverse Childhood Experiences
Studies on Adverse Childhood Experiences or ACEs illustrate a strong correlation between exposure to trauma experienced as a child and chronic adult behavioral and physical health problems. This presentation will provide a brief overview of the ongoing Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) studies and will discuss how to determine ACE scores for youth and adults. Discussion will focus on what constitutes an ACE and how these are often inter-related. Speakers will provide strategies for working with clients (both youth and adults) with trauma histories to improve outcomes for youth and limit the intergenerational transfer of ACEs through families. Speakers will also discuss the importance and benefits of developing a trauma informed workplace and how giving staff a unified language to talk about youth and their families can aid in creating a more caring environment.
