Screening for Trauma in a Trauma-Informed and Bias Reducing Way in Children’s Mental Health Services

When: Monday, March 30 – 12:00 PM

Duration: 1 hours

Location: WebEx

Event Details:

The goal of trauma-informed screening is to create a safe space to talk about trauma and toxic stress while simultaneously avoiding re-traumatizing children or their parent/caregivers. In this webinar, Dr. Crawford will discuss conducting trauma screening in children’s mental health along with her methods for reducing bias, prejudice, and racism in behavioral healthcare delivery systems.

In a trauma-informed organization, screening for trauma helps providers accurately identify the needs of children and families. This is particularly true in children’s mental health services where the potential for misdiagnosis is high when trauma is unidentified.

Effective trauma-informed screening involves attention to using tools that can accurately explore the full range of traumatic events or adversities that children and families experience in a sensitive and compassionate manner. In addition, conducting screening in a way that reduces the impact of bias, prejudice, and racism and other forms of invalidation that can add additional trauma symptoms and reject vulnerable people, is a priority.
