In May 2019, the Hospital Financial Management Association (HFMA) of Central NY and Northeast PA held a conference on ‘Pushing the Boundaries in Healthcare’, bringing together healthcare financial professionals from the region.
Wayne C. Teris, MD, FAAFP, Chief Medical Officer at Care Compass Network participated in a panel discussion around the various aspects of Population Health. Other panelists included Joann Sciandra, Vice President of Care Coordination and Integration at Geisinger; Nancy Rongo, Chief Quality Officer at UHS; and Phil Ryan, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer at The Guthrie Clinic and moderated by Scott Emery, Manager at M.S. Hall & Associates.
The panelists discussed the different areas of Population Health that continue to be done because it’s the right thing to do despite having a negative ROI for organizations. Attendees also heard discussions from the group around Value based Payment initiatives and how changes to the delivery model have affected the role of payers, healthcare providers, and the patient.
Other topics discussed by the panelists included, Social Determinants of Health and the new reforms being put forth, as well as how alternate payment models are encouraging collaboration and innovation in healthcare, and which disease categories have been the largest needle-movers.
New York State’s efforts in healthcare transformation through the Delivery System Reform Incentive Payment (DSRIP) program has captured the attention of organizations throughout the country. Organizations such as HFMA are outreaching NYS Performing Provider Systems (PPS) like Care Compass Network to share their expertise around Population Health, Social Determinants of Health, collaboration initiatives, and more.
